Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières (Agronomists and Veterinarians without borders) is an international solidarity association working for rural development by supporting family farming in dis-advantaged part of the world with the help of experts in farming and animal health. AVSF considers that farmers organisations are key players in the sustainable management of rural re-sources, economic development, food security and sovereignty in countries of the South. Beyond sup-plying markets, they provide employment, enhance biodiversity and encourage greater participation of farmers to local democracy.
The rural Mongolian economy is still based on traditional nomadic pastoralism. Even if this system has shown a strong capacity to adapt to local conditions, it currently faces a series of environmental and social challenges: degradation of pasture lands, poor access to services and markets for rural popula-tions.
In order to reach its general objective "to contribute to environmental durability and economic viability of nomadic pastoralism", AVSF Mongolia developed a strategy focusing on the following points:
1. to support herders organizations for a sustainable use of pasture lands
2. to contribute to improve animal productivity: genetic selection, zootechnical management, animal health
3. to participate to the control of animal contagious diseases with the Veterinary Services through a pi-lot project focusing on Brucellosis
4. to facilitate the processing and commercialization of quality animal products on the domestic and international markets
